Osteosynthesis – Surgical stabilization of bone fractures at the German Clinic Marbella

At German Clinic Marbella, we offer the most advanced surgical procedures for stabilizing bone fractures. An established method in traumatology is osteosynthesis, in which fractured bones are fixed in their natural position using special implants.

What is osteosynthesis?

Internal fixation is a surgical procedure for fracture stabilization. The goal is to properly align and reunite bone fragments to promote optimal natural bone healing. The most common applications include femoral neck fractures, hip fractures, and shaft fractures.

Osteosynthesis procedure

The operation is usually performed under general or regional anesthesia. Depending on the type and location of the fracture, different techniques are used:

  • Plate osteosynthesis: Metal plates fixed to the bone with screws.
  • Screw fixation: Screws that directly fix the fracture, commonly in the femoral neck area.
  • Locked intramedullary nail: A nail inserted into the medullary canal of the bone stabilizes long bones.
  • External fixator: An external frame used to stabilize complex or open fractures.

After the procedure, there is an initial rest period. Then, in coordination with our physical therapy team, progressive loading begins.

Possible risks of osteosynthesis

Despite high success rates, complications may occur:

  • Infections
  • Thrombosis and embolisms
  • Poor bone consolidation
  • Loosening or breakage of implants
  • Limitations on mobility

Our specialists minimize these risks through accurate diagnoses, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and comprehensive postoperative follow-up.

Duration of operation and recovery

The duration of the operation depends on the method and the complexity of the fracture. Osteosynthesis with screws typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, while procedures with plates or intramedullary nails can take up to two hours.

The healing process varies depending on the type of fracture. Simple fractures typically heal within 6 to 12 weeks, while more complex injuries may require up to 6 months of recovery. The average stay in our clinic is 3 to 7 days; in more complicated cases, it may be longer.

Return to everyday life

Return to work depends on the physical demands of the job:

  • Light activities (e.g. office work): approximately 2-6 weeks
  • Physically demanding jobs: between 3 and 6 months

Individualized assessment is performed during postoperative follow-up.

Materials used

For fixation, only biocompatible materials such as stainless steel or titanium are used, which are distinguished by their high stability and good tolerance. In specific cases, resorbable implants that dissolve in the body without leaving residue are also used.

Costs of osteosynthesis

The cost depends on the scope of the treatment and the materials used. While public insurance in Germany usually covers the costs, in private clinics or international insurance companies, prices range from €3,000 to €10,000, depending on the complexity of the treatment. We will be happy to provide you with personalized advice.

High success rates – For your mobility and quality of life

With success rates exceeding 90%, osteosynthesis is a highly reliable method for restoring bone function. For optimal healing, in addition to precise surgery, early mobilization and ongoing physical therapy rehabilitation are crucial.

At German Clinic Marbella, a team of experienced specialists, modern surgical technology, and a dedicated team are at your disposal to ensure a safe and rapid return to your daily life.
